Creative Movement and Dance

Creative Dance for Portland KidsIn Creative Outlet’s Creative Movement class our goal is to keep your child healthy and fit as they grow through a program specifically designed to engage children ages 2 – 6 in age appropriate physical activities.  We explore rhythm, dance, sound and movement thru various modalities such as games, indoor circuits, and choreographed dance pieces.

Imagination is the key we use to open up a door into a world full of fun exercise. We begin each class with warming up and stretching our muscles to create strength and flexibility. We do this by “flying to different lands”, “riding our bicycles” and “making crazy pizza”.  At times we become Fairies with wands and wings, other times we may become Knights and Princess. We may “go on a safari”, or encounter various animals on a “trip to the jungle” all the while the children will demonstrate across the room how they would interpret each animal’s movements. We incorporate aspects of the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) curriculum, and use many props throughout our time together. Each class is designed to be slightly different so that the children are constantly stimulated by the environment we create.

We look forward to the opportunity and privilege of introducing your child to the world of Creative Movement.

Yoga

Creative Outlets 4 Kids Yoga program introduces young children to the wonderful and healthful practice of Yoga. Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. Doing yoga, children exercise, play, connect more deeply with the inner self, and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them. Yoga brings that marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface.

Each class is 45 minutes in length and is comprised of breath work, asanas, poses, visualization and Yoga movement games. We use games such as Yoga obstacle courses and props (such as Yoga balls that expand and contract to help learn proper breathing techniques), a stuffed animal friend, stories and even art work along with music to keep the children engaged and having fun.

Our teachers work on modified poses that are appropriate for growing bodies and incorporate a focus point for the month such as Breath, Strength, Listening and Healthy Eating Habits. The classes are developed into a monthly theme such as "Spring Flowers" or "A Trip to the Zoo" . When yogis developed the asanas (poses) many thousands of years ago, they still lived close to the natural world and used animals and plants for inspiration—the sting of a scorpion, the grace of a swan, the grounded stature of a tree. When children imitate the movements and sounds of nature, they have a chance to get inside another being and imagine taking on its qualities. When they assume the pose of the lion (Simhasana) for example, they experience not only the power and behavior of the lion, but also their own sense of power: when to be aggressive, when to retreat.

The physical movements introduce kids to yoga's true meaning: union, expression, and honor for oneself and one's part in the delicate web of life. Yoga is a non competitive sport that allows children to participate without feeling stress about their performance. Children who take part in our Yoga program will find fun and healthy ways to channel their energy, develop better concentration and improve coordination.

The following links show the important correlation between brain development in children and the benefits of yoga for young children :

Additionally, reading children's Yoga books with your children at home is a great way to bond and reinforces the idea of them exploring the poses at home as well. Some great books that you can borrow from your local Library are: Watch Me Do Yoga by Bobby Clennell, and The Happiest Tree by Uma Krishnaswami.

Music

Creative Outlets 4 Kids Music program offers children the nationally recognized Do Re Me curriculum which stimulates many areas of the brain and contributes to learning a broad range of skills. Music itself has several important characteristics such as rhythm, pitch, timbre and melody. The brain picks up on these vibrations through the Cerebrum, the Frontal Lobe, the Cerebellum and the Limbic Systems which are all activated by Music and can enhance a child's ability to recognize abstract ideas, special forms and sequential skills. Our music program will promote better brain function, memory skills and creativity while your child is having fun with their friends!

The Do Re Me curriculum is a high quality 36 week program that we base our Music class on. Although it designed to be used to facilitate comprehensive learning from September – May, it can also be easily modified for those children who start later in the school year. It has been designed for our teachers to use during Music class time, as well as additional suggestions for parents on their website of how they can (if they so desire) contribute to their child's love of music at home through free downloads or crafting ideas that inspire a love of music. Each of our valued Music teachers will bring their own unique creativity to the class as well.

Our Instructors teach with confidence about:

  • The difference between beat and rhythm.
  • Making music with body parts (snapping, clapping, vocals)
  • Other countries of the world through songs, games and dances.
  • Speaking different languages.
  • Classical composers.
  • Instruments of the orchestra.

We also will be exploring the use of many types on instruments in fun and exciting ways.

Instruments to be used are as follows:

  • Cymbals
  • Rhythm Sticks
  • Tone blocks
  • Triangles
  • Maracas

*Studies show that children who learn new music do far better in all subjects in school

What Parents are saying about Creative Outlets 4 Kids

The boys really get excited about dance and yoga! They had forgotten the names of the moves by the times they got home, but were super cute trying to show me what they had learned. Thanks for providing such a great outlet for the kids. Twilla H.

They are great classes and my son has already applied them to other things he has been involved in, ie… skiing and baseball. It has taught him to relax the body, and focus, along with balance and rhythm. I can't tell you how much that helps in every day life for a small child. Thank you very much for offering the classes at the school! Aaronn M.

Very cool program! When my 8 month old is ready....I will sign him up :-) Joslyn S.

We have really appreciated not going to classes at night when our little girl is soooo tired. I have mentioned it to many friends. Kristen V.

The children really enjoy the classes offered through Creative Outlets 4 Kids. The instructors are experienced and have a way of getting the children excited and focused! We love seeing them learn new skills, gain confidence and be entertained by seasoned professionals. Families enjoy the convenience of the classes being held at our schools since many do not have time to drive all over town to dance studios. We couldn't recommend a better program! Jacqueline at Creative Minds Learning Centers
